Calvin Thomas Ewing

January 25, 1942 — May 4, 2024

Tulare

Cal Ewing has lived in Tulare for over 50 years and is well-known and loved by many people. So, if you know Cal, he has one last message for you. Cal has decided to kick the bucket!

Before he called Tulare his forever home in 1967, he lived in several states because his parents, Gilbert and Lola Mae Ewing, were in ministry for the Assemblies of God. Shortly after being born in Fresno, Ca. his family moved to Missouri to pastor a church in Springfield. There, Cal graduated high school and began working for the Gospel Publishing House with his good friend Ronny Knott.

Cal joined the Army National Guard and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood. Once his tour of duty was completed, he found his dream girl and never looked back. Calvin and Janet Ewing were married on August 8, 1964 and had their first child, Keith Ewing, two years later. Tired of the snow and ice, Cal and his new family headed for sunshine and new opportunities in California. In 1968, they had their final child named Kevin Ewing.

In Tulare, most people got to know Cal through a few of his careers. He worked at the Chamber of Commerce for about 9 years as their Vice President. Later in his career, he wanted to finally pursue his dream of driving big rigs. Starting with Swift Trucking, he learned the ropes and was able to travel across the U.S. seeing the countryside. Once he became a seasoned driver, he landed his favorite driving job working for J.D. Heiskell & Co. in Tulare. After 10 years with J.D., Cal decided it was time to retire.

If you never crossed Cal’s path through the Chamber or J.D. Heiskell, then you knew him through the Tulare Farm Show. Cal became a volunteer in 1975 and faithfully helped the Farm Show for 49 years. He loved it so much that once one year came to a close, he was already looking forward to the next one.

Calvin Thomas Ewing is survived by his wife, Janet Ewing, of almost 60 years. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Lisa Ewing, of Visalia and their three children Kyle, Kyra and Ian. His oldest son, Keith Ewing, passed away in 2001. He is survived by his two sisters Mary Trumbo of Memphis, Tn. and Karlene Ewing of Visalia. Cal became a father figure to his two surviving nieces Lisa Giraudi of Carlsbad, Ca. and Rachelle Bailey Whitney of Visalia. He is also survived by Rachelle’s children Deanna Espinoza, Kayla Pearson and John Scott Bailey. Cal is survived by his other two nieces Melinda Wyand of Hanford and Rebecca Hartshorn of Hanford, and their parents Paul and Sheri Yost in Hanford.  He is also survived by his niece Jenny Ewing of Fullerton, Ca. Cal is survived by his two nephews, James Trumbo of MS, Tim Trumbo of TN, and niece Cheryl Averil of TN, along with their father Tommy Trumbo of TN. He is also survived by his two nephews Lee and Sean Bohannon of ID and niece Kem Griffin of TX.
